The questionboard questions and philosophical play activities you see on this site mostly come from ideas the children present in the stories they tell as they play and interact with each other.
Here is an example.
The children had been making wands out of sticks and were playing “magic”. At some point a small group took their wands inside and began to play schools. The wands became ordinary pencils or were abandoned until …..One child playing the role of Mrs Stanley picked up her wand and said “Abracadabra ! “
At this point another child said “wow ! I can read !”
Sadly i had to leave observing this play to deal with an incident but very much wanted to share this observed story.
Before sharing this magic teacher story the next day I turned the scenario into a BETTER OR WORSE Question board question…..
Would it be better or worse if teachers had magic wands?
This provoked much discussion about the role of teacher and also about whether teachers would still be magic of they left their wands at home and what if children found it. ..
It also raised the idea that teachers and children are magic because they are special and do amazing things like learn to climb to the top of trees and make people happy.
Try this question with your children and see what they think
Several days of role play and children’s stories will emerge from this… I can absolutely guarantee that
