Philosophical thoughts from Year 1 pupils at Lionwood Infant & Nursery School, Norwich as we shared the book together.
Transcript session 1
Interesting comments and thoughts that arose.
I think that is a thought.
SS- I wonder,what is a thought ?
Henry was thinking in his head while he was sleeping.
That happens to me sometimes maybe it happens just to some people?
I have bad dreams
I hear noises in my head.
I hear noises saying “yes” and “no”, saying ” don’t do that don’t do this”
I think he is thinking about is he Henry Finch?
He looks the same as the picture and also in the top of the picture.
SS-Does he know what he looks like?
No, but he thinks, “Maybe I’m the one who has got inside the beast”
He is not Henry Finch, he thinks he is someone else not Henry Finch and those clouds that is what your mind is thinking right now.
See that picture? Those 2 thought bubbles means he is really really thinking
SS-Do we have thinking clouds in our heads right now?
They are speech bubbles
SS- So do you think you have speech bubbles in your minds?
Yes I do
No we have brains
SS- If I opened up you heads and looked inside would I find a thought in your brain, would I be able to pick it up?
I know how, because speech bubbles are just invisible you can’t see them,so if you just picked one up they are not real because if you squashed it you can’t hear anything so it’s just invisible so it’s not inside your head ….not any of your body -It’s from a dimension far far away in space
When I’ve been born it’s from another people
So when you’ve been born you get all that stuff inside your body it’s being born
So it’s like tiny tiny and not here yet and when you are like born it’s all there getting bigger and bigger and bigger until you can see in your brain
SS-So where were you before you were born?
In mummy and daddy’s tummy
Not daddy’s just mummy’s
We were apes
When we were apes we were human then all the ape skin fell off and all the bones came big and then they thought that all the rest of the apes could get the skin and make it our colour .The skin came off because it was too hot and then blood and organs and stuff
On this page he looks dead.
He’s not dead.
Because it’s in his imagination, because it’s in that bubble.
Now Henry looks really angry. He’s angry because he wants to fight him.
He’s angry cos he’s thinking to kill the beast like but do you know how? he has the cross on his eye
But in real life we don’t have cross on our eyes, just closed.
I think he’s going to go inside and into his tail and tickle him and make him laugh
It says who ate him
Does he die?
No he’s still alive Henry is going to fly down in his tummy and get him out .. I mean the other finch who got eaten
You see that cross there ? he’s thinking.. this is a bit strange, his eyes are white then there’s crosses and then he can see that. This there ,these things, this bones.
He’s thinking he’s going to be dead
So he’s not Henry Finch.
If he thinks, that means he’s still alive, but when he doesn’t think that means he’s dead.
Because you haven’t got a brain when you are dead
He’s thinking things that happened before
There’s something in here and a mouse and a bird and a worm
He (beast) doesn’t like birds but he needs food
He could eat other things
He wants to eat the family of Henry because his favourite lunch is birds
SS-OK, so can you all draw the inside of the beast on this big piece of paper? All his intestines and things he’s eaten .
And then think about some questions you might ask the beast or Henry about anything that puzzles you and I will write them on the paper.
Why did the beast follow the birds instructions?
Why did the finches make so much noise?
Why did Henry finch have bad thoughts?
Thinking is quite good and also quite bad – is thinking good or bad?
Why doesn’t the beast instead of eating the finches eat plants ?
Why does Henry dive into the beast?
Why did Henry say “no!”
Why did Henry Finch have bad thoughts?
How can you think different thoughts to your words?
Is Henry brave or silly?
Can you be great just being always thinking?
SS who has any first thoughts about any of these questions ?
I’ve got some things to say about why the beast followed instructions… It’s because he heard them
Maybe, because Henry shouted them in his stomach?
No , I think he didn’t, you can’t hear voices in your tummy
But that’s because you don’t have a person in there
I’m thinking about was Henry going to be great…You know when Henry thinks he’s great ? It’s because he wears a crown in the picture.
That means he is the king.
Yes, if he kills every ‘thing’ that is bad, he will be king.
I think he wouldn’t be the king if he takes his crown off to fight the beast though.
He thinks he can be king so he can be.
But I can’t be a real king if I think it , only a pretend king.
Well Henry is just pretending because it’s in a think bubble.
Pretending is thinking and thinking is pretending.
SS..So let’s put our Henry Finch bird inside the beast we have drawn and write some of his thoughts in thought bubbles. What things do you think Henry is thinking?
Don’t eat my friends
I don’t want to be eaten
I don’t want to be dead
I will be great
I will be trapped
SS…So how can the beast hear these thoughts? How do they get from the stomach to the beast so he can hear them?
If there is someone inside you and if it echoes then you could hear, then if your brain hears then it is thinking. It’s going to his brain. (Draws example)
I think you have to be in some ones head to hear their thoughts.
Or in their tummy like Henry was.
But how do the thoughts get to his head?
You need to put your ears together really close like this but Henry was too far away.
But thoughts go out in lines like this (illustrates) it means it’s really loud but you can’t see them they are invisible , you just hear them with your ears. You can hear even if you can’t see someone calling you. If you can’t hear then it might be going up your mouth and nose into your brain .
Or you could draw it
SS- so does the thought go onto the piece of paper?
Yes so now you know it because you can see it. It’s not invisible anymore.
Let me draw something…The thoughts have to go all the way from his mouth to his brain and his ears like this. From his tummy up here & up here .
I’m thinking but you can’t see it.
SS…Ok so I’m going to do a thinking experiment ..do you think you can trick me? I want to see if you are really thinking or just pretending. I’ll watch really carefully and see if I can see if anyone is not really thinking.
SS .(chooses one child) I think you were pretending to think?
Yes I was only pretending
SS- very good you tricked me, so now you can tell me what you were really thinking whilst you were pretending to think?
I was thinking about nothing it was all black
SS- So were you thinking about what nothing looks like?
Yes, thinking about black colours
SS-So I wonder, do we ever think nothing?
No, our dreams come instead, like when we sleep we think of nothing but our night time dreams think instead
