The children became fascinated about the seemingly impossible events happening in the story of Alice in Wonderland . I decided to create a game based on the discussions we were having along the lines of “But how do we know that can’t ever happen?”
Activity-Possible or Impossible?
You will need
A label that reads “Impossible” and a label that reads “Possible”
A set of cards each with one statement taken from the list below.
Show the possible and impossible cards to the children. Ask them if they know what the words mean. Reinforce the meanings as “Could never ever happen” and “might/could happen one day”
Spread a selection of statement cards face up on the floor. Place the Impossible card at one side of the space and the possible card at the other side.
Challenge the children to spend a minute thinking about the cards that you have chosen and ask them to move the cards to the label that fits their thinking. They may do this either working alone or in partners.
Bring the cards, labels and children back to the enquiry circle and talk together about why they decided things might be possible or impossible. Encourage the children to find reasons to agree and disagree with these thoughts. Explain to the children that through rigorous thinking they might be able to move the card to the other label.
Discuss which cards you could move and the reasons why?
The following are examples of statements that you might wish to use for this activity based on Alice in Wonderland . You may also wish for the children to create some scenarios of their own to use.
Possible or Impossible?
The children were then asked to think of more examples that didn’t have to be about Alice n Wonderland that they could ask their parents and carers. They came up with the following;
Would it be possible or impossible to have…..
People with green skin
Cars that can fly
People who stay babies forever
Aliens ruling the world
An end to chocolate
All people look the same
Dinosaurs coming back to life
Nobody hurting anybody ever
Time traveling machines
No animals on the planet
No plants on the planet
Real super heroes
No Mummies and daddies
People only living underground
